Deputy Head of the Eastern Cape

The successful candidate must be a strong organiser, activist and coordinator who will support the growth of Equal Education in the Eastern Cape. EE has member branches in and around King William’s Town as well as working with partner organisations across the Eastern Cape. The main office is in King William’s Town. This job will involve campaign strategy and planning, youth leadership development, political education, media engagement, financial management, human resource management and logistics.


Key Responsibilities of this exciting role includes:

  • Assist the Head of the Eastern Cape in meeting the objectives of the office and organization at large
  • Lead campaigns to advance the struggle for quality and equal education
  • Manage the staff and volunteers of the Eastern Cape office
  • Coordinate the running of youth group and mass meetings
  • Coordinate the Community Leadership 1 year programme
  • Coordinate a functional Leadership Committee structure
  • Organise and run training seminars and camps for equalisers and facilitators
  • Represent EE publicly
  • Managerial responsibilities: Plan and monitor budget
  • Implement the Policies and Procedures of EE
  • Oversee the operations and physical environment of the Eastern Cape office Build relationships with other parts of civil society and government stakeholders
  • Assist with fundraising as needed
  • Contribute to and support research work


Requirements for the position:

  • University degree or equivalent
  • Experience in community organising
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Outstanding organizational, leadership, management and people skills and experience
  • The successful candidate needs to be independent, a self-starter, enjoy working with young people


Training and Material Development Coordinator (Internal Education and Training Unit)

Reporting to the Head of Policy and Training and based at Equal Education’s Khayelitsha Head Office in Cape Town.


Key Responsibilities of this exciting role includes:

  • Project coordination: working with a team of materials developers in the production of new publications and training materials.
  • Publishing of the materials independently and/or with an established publishing house
  • Event planning for launches and distribution of new publications and training materials
  • Coordinating workshops and camps for the training of EE members
  • Writing and editing of new publications and training materials
  • Developing new content as requested by provinces to support campaigns and activist education (activist education includes programs for youth groups, camps, workshops, etc.).
  • Managing the IETU video library
  • Providing support to, and working with, the IETU database manager and software developer


Requirements for the post:

  • A university degree, preferably post-graduate
  • Candidates should have strong English written and communication skills
  • Sharp editorial eye; strong project management skills; strong interpersonal skills; ability to synthesize information
  • Strong capacity with Microsoft Office; ease with new software; knowledge of, and desire to learn about activism and South African history and politics
  • A post-graduate qualification in Humanities, a publishing background, youth or group facilitation experience, and multilingualism could prove advantageous



The position includes planning, proposal writing, report writing, monitoring of budgets and expenditure, and relationship-building. The job will involve working on long term planning and strategy both in working with funding partners and in reflecting EE's work.

Additionally, strong research and communication skills are required in order to be able to engage with EE staff members, evaluate projects and programme and then represent EE's work.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys writing, thinking analytically, strategy, communicating with contemporaries regularly, and working towards securing long term relationships and funding from funding partners. Recent university graduates with degrees in which substantive writing is required are encouraged to apply.

This position is based in our Khayelitsha office and reports to the Chief Finance Officer.


Requirements for the post:

  • A strong university qualification or equivalent
  • Outstanding writing skills
  • Skilled on Excel to create and understand budgets and financial reports
  • Organized, self-motivated and disciplined, with the ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects simultaneously



The Spokesperson plays a critical role in communicating EE’s work and political positions to the public, primarily through media platforms. Speak to print and broadcast media on behalf of EE in a professional, transparent and accurate manner with an authoritative voice on education. Central to this role is building and maintaining EE’s public profile.

  • Media oversight and engagement

  • Oversight of official social media platforms
  • Website management


Requirements for the post:

  • Matric certificate
  • Post-Graduate Degree (Preferably in Humanities/Social Sciences Related field)
  • Experience in editorial work
  • Strong public speaking and writing for public audience skills
